Story Vs Reality: Making Documentary Films

Utilizing case studies and clips, this workshop will examine the fine line between the need to create an entertaining story while trying to truthfully represent reality. How can you find a way to make your subjects trust you and forget the camera is even there? How can you capture 'reality'? When should you put the camera down? These and other issues will be explored. With Sarah McCann.

Zombie Hackers

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of web programming and JavaScript. By the end of the workshop, participants will develop their own web page that will consist of some ‘eye-opening’ and ‘hair raising’ features! With Ronan Lynch

Creative Interface Design

This workshop will explore new DIY methods for interfacing with multimedia work that extend beyond the keyboard and mouse. Participants will build their own custom tangible interface prototypes using a combination of electronics and arts and crafts materials. With Kieran Nolan

‘What ‘type’ are you?’

This workshop explores a conceptual approach to creating meaning in visual communications. Activities aim to investigate our understanding of typography, colour and layout. With Emma Hogan.

The role of 'the producer' in music

This workshop will examine the importance of the producer in the music making process. By reverse engineering a number of tracks it will allow participants to gain a clear insight into the creative and technical expertise a producer must have. With Neil O'Connor.

Speaker and Panelist Biographies

Sarah McCann 
Sarah McCann is the current Head of Section of Creative Media in Dundalk Institute of Technology. Sarah is also documentary filmmaker and has had her work screened in festivals in Ireland, the UK and the US. 'One Ocean: No Limits', a one-hour documentary which Sarah directed & produced along with performing additional major camera & editing roles, was acquired upon completion by RTE for broadcast and has been signed for distribution by Network Ireland Television.

Ronan Lynch 
Ronan Lynch is the Recruitment & Retention Officer in the Department of Computing & Mathematics in DkIT. As part of his role, Ronan is responsible for the running of the ITLC in the Department, a tutor-supported study environment that assists Computing students with their studies in the Institute.

Kieran Nolan 
Kieran Nolan is a lecturer at Dundalk Institute of Technology where he is Programme Director of the BA in Media Arts and Technologies. His research work in experimental interaction design, indie game development, and multimedia teaching has been published at conferences and exhibitions worldwide, including LA Game Space, The Science Gallery, Transmediale and the A MAZE International Independent Video Games Festival. http://kierannolan.com

Emma Hogan 
Emma Hogan is Programme Director of the BA(Hons) in Communications in Creative Media at Dundalk Institute of Technology. Prior to working in education, Emma spent seven years as an Art Director in London. Here she worked on creative digital campaigns for companies such as Dare Digital, Fitch and the BBC. Her undergraduate degree is in Graphic Design.
