Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or LCVP or FETAC/QQI Level 4 Award. Equal consideration will be given to mature applicants (those aged over 23) who do not meet these entry requirements.

Course Description
This course will provide students with the knowledge, skills and qualifications necessary to pursue a career in the area of early years care and education. This childcare course will offer additional opportunities for students who wish to specialise in working as a special needs assistant in a variety of early years care and education settings. Students will receive training in the basic practical skills, knowledge and understanding of the role of the special needs assistant in crèches, playschools, primary schools, etc. As part of the course, students undertake placement in a range of childcare settings.

Career Opportunities
This course will give students a firm foundation in the qualities and skills required for employment as a childcare worker in crèches and playschools and as a classroom assistant in a special national school.

Progression Opportunities
At Cavan Institute: Graduates of this course may progress to study for a FETAC/QQI Level 6 Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education.
Elsewhere: Graduates are eligible to apply through the CAO and/or Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to year one of a range of higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities (please check with the particular Institution regarding local eligibility requirements).
