Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied or LCVP or FETAC/QQI Level 4 Award. Equal consideration will be given to mature applicants (those aged over 23) who do not meet these entry requirements.

Course Description
This course places an emphasis on the care of people in both the community and in the healthcare residential sector. It is suitable for those wishing to embark on a career in caring and those wishing to gain a recognised qualification in caring. It equips the carer with the practical knowledge and skills required to support and assist people in their daily lives. Throughout the course, students will visit and obtain work experience in a variety of settings. Placement will be monitored by qualified healthcare practitioners.

Career Opportunities
Graduates can pursue employment in a care setting, either in the home, in HSE or privately run day care centres, nursing homes or in residential care institutions. Job prospects are excellent since many institutions are now advertising for healthcare staff with this qualification.

Progression Opportunities
At Cavan Institute: Graduates of this course may progress to the first year of a HETAC Higher Certificate in Arts in Applied Social Studies in Social Care, which is a two-year Athlone Institute of Technology programme where students take year one in Cavan Institute and year two in AIT. Graduates may also apply for a place on the BTEC/Edexcel Higher National Diploma in Health and Social Care, a two-year programme also available at Cavan Institute.
Elsewhere: Graduates are eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to year one of a range of higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities (please check with the particular institution regarding local eligibility requirements).
